The 120-MPH Routine and the 160-MPH Outlier: Serve Speed, Calibrated
Professional first serves average 115-125 mph for ATP men and 100-110 for WTA women, with records near 160. Here's the speed data, and why placement beats pace.

The serve-speed graphic is tennis broadcasting’s favorite number, flashed after every ace and stripped of all context. Here is the context — what professional serves actually measure, and why the fastest number on tour doesn’t belong to the best server.
The tour baselines
ATP (men): first serves from elite servers average roughly 115–125 mph (185–200 km/h), with the tour’s big servers routinely peaking above 130. Second serves drop to 90–105 mph, trading pace for spin and margin. WTA (women): first serves average roughly 100–110 mph, with the biggest servers peaking in the 120s. Those averages have crept upward for two decades — racquet and string technology, taller players, and training built explicitly around the serve.
The record shelf
The fastest recorded serves live in the high 150s: Sam Groth’s 163.7 mph came at a Challenger event with a generous radar, and John Isner’s 157.2 mph stands as the fastest in tour-main-draw conditions; Taylor Dent, Andy Roddick, and Reilly Opelka populate the same shelf. On the women’s side, speeds in the low-to-mid 120s from Sabine Lisicki (131 mph) and Serena Williams top the book. Notice what’s absent from those lists: most of the players considered the best servers of their eras.
Why the best servers aren’t the fastest
Roger Federer rarely cracked 130, and his serve won him more cheap points than almost anyone’s, because serving is a placement-and-disguise problem that speed merely assists. The data is blunt: professionals win points on first serves at 70–80% when the serve lands in the corners, regardless of whether it arrived at 118 or 132. An ace at 115 mph painted on the sideline counts identically to one at 140 down the middle — and the 115 version is repeatable on break point. Ace leaders correlate with serve placement spread and disguise far more tightly than with average speed.
Calibrating the rest of us
Club data for perspective: a strong club player’s first serve lives around 80–95 mph; a 100-mph serve puts an amateur in rarefied local company; college D1 servers sit near 105–120. The gap to the pros is real but smaller than the gap in second serves — the pro second serve at 95 mph with kick is the shot no club player owns, and it’s where matches are actually held. The broadcast graphic measures the loud number; the scoreboard runs on the quiet one.
