Djokovic leads men’s Open Era Grand Slam fourth-round appearances with 71
Novak Djokovic leads men’s Open Era Grand Slam fourth-round appearances with 71 through the 2026 US Open. Here’s what counts—and what the record measures.

Novak Djokovic holds the men’s Open Era record for reaching the fourth round of Grand Slam singles tournaments, with 71 through the 2026 US Open. Roger Federer’s career total is 69. Djokovic moved ahead with his 70th at the 2026 Australian Open, then added another at Wimbledon. Tennis.com documents the record-breaking 70th appearance; Wimbledon confirms his subsequent fourth-round berth.
The category matters: this is a men’s singles, Open Era record, not a combined men’s and women’s leaderboard or a doubles statistic.
What counts as a fourth-round appearance?
The fourth round is the round of 16, often written as R16 or 4R in results tables. In a 128-player singles draw, three rounds reduce the field from 128 to 64, then 32, then 16. The 2026 Grand Slam rulebook specifies singles main draws of up to 128 players.
For this record, “appearance” means reaching that stage, not losing there. A player who reaches the quarterfinals, semifinals or final—or wins the title—also adds one fourth-round appearance for that tournament. They do not add multiple appearances by advancing further.
Nor must a fourth-round match actually take place. At the 2026 Australian Open, Djokovic reached the last 16 by beating Botic van de Zandschulp. His scheduled fourth-round opponent, Jakub Mensik, then withdrew, sending Djokovic into the quarterfinals by walkover. That tournament still counts toward his fourth-round total, as Tennis.com’s record summary explains.
How Djokovic’s total reached 71
Djokovic and Federer were tied on 69 after Djokovic beat Cameron Norrie in the third round of the 2025 US Open, according to CNN’s contemporary report.
| 2026 major | Reached the fourth round? | Running career total |
|---|---|---|
| Australian Open | Yes | 70 |
| Roland-Garros | No—lost in the third round | 70 |
| Wimbledon | Yes | 71 |
| US Open | No—lost in the first round | 71 |
Period covered: through the 2026 US Open; updated October 11, 2026. The running totals add subsequent last-16 berths to the documented baseline of 70 at the Australian Open.
What the record measures—and what it doesn’t
Fourth-round totals capture repeated progress beyond the opening rounds across a long career. They are different from tournament entries, fourth-round victories and consecutive fourth-round appearances.
A career total also rewards opportunity: playing more majors creates more chances to add to it. For a consistency comparison, pair the count with fourth-round berths divided by major main-draw entries, using the same period and counting convention. Tournament-by-tournament totals can reveal whether that consistency is spread across the four majors or concentrated at particular events.
None of those numbers, alone, isolates serving quality or mental strength under pressure. This is a descriptive record of tournament progress. For titles and match victories, use the separate categories in our guide to Grand Slam tennis records.
